We are excited to invite you to the opening of Queer Newfoundland Hockey League and Body Languages at TRUCK Contemporary Art on October 18th from 7PM - 9PM. The reception will be preceded by an artist talk with Body Languages artists Iván Acebo-Choy, Jillian Fleck, and Patrick Moskwa at 6PM
Queer Newfoundland Hockey League (QNHL) from artist Lucas Morneau (Sackville, NB) is a fictional hockey league made up of 14 teams, all of which use pejoratives used against the LGBT2QIA+ community as team names. QNHL uses these pejoratives to reclaim the words often used against queer individuals both on and off the ice. The exhibition features a number of handmade crochet and rug-hooked jerseys, each representing a team in the QNHL.
Body Languages is a group exhibition from Iván Acebo-Choy (Saltillo, MX), Jillian Fleck (Calgary, AB), and Patrick Moskwa (Calgary, AB) which seeks to untangle the intricacies of queer loneliness and the deviant nature of masculine identity in cisheteronormative space. Through explorations of subtextually queer spaces such as the men’s locker room, the arenas of full-contact sport, and myths of the monstrous akin to the lonely minotaur, this exhibition inquires after the ways secretive gender and sexuality take shape through isolation.
On Saturday, October 19th at 2PM, QNHL creator Lucas Morneau will host a casual “stitch ‘n’ bitch” event, at which participants will work on existing projects of their own while speaking with Morneau about their practice. Participants must bring their own supplies and projects to work on if they wish to craft during the event.
These events are free to attend and all are welcome! We hope you will be able to join us for these special occasions.
