MNG MAIN: The Reckoning
The Reckoning by Jeff Wielki
March 3 - April 6
MNG Main Space
Reception - March 21 6pm - 8pm
-
Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s 1834 poem “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” Coleridge’s poem resonates with themes of human/environment conflicts. The Reckoning abstracts a moment in Coleridge’s work when deathly supernatural figures arrive to decide the fate of the Mariner and the ships crew after the Mariner kills one of God’s creatures. The Mariner must spend the rest of his days warning others of the wrongs he committed against nature.

MNG LRT: Roxas City Fishing Port
Roxas City Fishing Port by Thea Galang
LRT Space
March 21 - April 6
Reception - March 21 from 6-8pm
-
Roxas City Fishing Port" is the artist’s interpretation of an important aspect of their birthplace in the Philippines. To them, the fishing port in their hometown represents the livelihoods of people, and how their lives are fueled by the act of fishing. The sculpture captures a singular moment in industrial fishing, where the fish are just barely raised out of the water and the tones of the fish emerge from the water.

I never used to take the train, I also never used to find crosswalks beautiful. These transitory moments in between events in my life have not only become all encompassing sources of inspiration but they have also given me a new rubric by which to look at my work. Take the time to feel the sun on your face when you can...and take your professors feedback with a massive grain of salt.

MNG LRT: Naive Nouveau
Naive Nouveau by Sasha Terway
LRT Space
February 14 - March 8
Reception - February 14 from 6-8pm

Naive Nouveau is an aesthetic characterized as simpleminded and cute but draws on the sense that the artist knows more than they are choosing to tell with subject matter that is childlike in presentation but sophisticated in execution. Ink is a medium indicative of how I romanticize my subconscious, in its fluidity, dreamlike washes, and the care it takes to control. This series delves into the psyche of dreams, and romanticizing despair.

In the spirit of communal working that is fundamental to the culture of printmaking and textile craft, this exhibition is a collaborative venture between the artists of Alberta University of the Arts (AUArts) and those of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts (SMFA). Artists working in either medium were given the opportunity to share their practice with another community in an international exhibition that was curated and sent for display at the collaborating institution.
This installation of works is primarily of the artists from SMFA, with a small collection of works by current students and recent alumni of AUArts.
This exhibition was facilitated by the Marion Nicoll Gallery in conjunction with Jolie Bird, Jonathan Creese, Megan Kirk, and Vicky Rodriquez.

As a first-generation Canadian with Venezuelan-Hungarian roots, my artist practice connects ancestral traditions with personal narratives of displacement and cultural reclamation. My recent ceramic reinterpretations of pre-Columbian figurines honor the expressions of my ancestors, who endured forced assimilation. Despite this tragic history, these traditionally inspired ceramics exude a playful, contemporary charm, embodying an endearing human quality that resonates across a millennium.
Shaped by my experience as part of the Venezuelan diaspora, I delve into the legacies of cultural oppression while uncovering moments of joy and care amid loss. My current MNG exhibition embodies the resilience of practices that have journeyed far—from Tacarigua, Venezuela, to Treaty 7 Territory. The intimate window display, painted in a rich vinotinto hue symbolic of Venezuelan identity, invites passersby to reflect on the enduring legacies of diasporic identity. It reminds us that cultural heritage evolves and endures across generations and landscapes

MNG Main Space Presents: YELLOW FEVER!!
YELLOW FEVER!!
Jessica Wu
Main Space Exhibition
11.28.2024 - 12.17.2024
Opening reception November 29 6PM
YELLOW FEVER!! is a selection of work that I have created discussing expected narratives, performing identity, and identity formation as a Chinese Canadian. I critique the stereotyping of Asian artists, the commodification of marginalized cultural production, and the so-called “Asian American Exhibit”. The exhibition is a journey through critiquing stereotypes, tokenization within institutions, to expressing how these realities have affected me as an artist, but more crucially, as a person.
As an Asian Canadian artist, I have often felt a pressure to conform to a few expected narratives when speaking about my identity in my art. I have felt a pervasive pressure to tell stories and relay experiences that are immediately relatable or accessible to audiences that do not have the same experiences as I do. There are expectations from audiences and institutions that put marginalized artists into boxes based on their identities. These boxes and ways of categorizing art and artists can be limiting to authentic expression, and commodifies our lived experiences for consumption.
YELLOW FEVER!! examines the nuances and difficulties with navigating the art world as a marginalized person, whether that be from society, the institution, or the self. It aims to ask the audience to challenge their expectations and how they interact with not only the work, but the artist.
Jessica Wu is an emerging artist. She was born in China and immigrated to Canada when she was 5 years old, and grew up in Calgary. After taking a printmaking course on a whim in her first year of university, she fell in love with the medium, and hasn’t looked back since. Now, she mainly works in silkscreen, lithography, and surface design on fabric. Her artistic practice focuses on themes of cultural and racial identity, memory, and sexuality. She marries printmaking, fabric dyeing, embroidery, drawing, and painting to explore how diaspora, tradition, and self-determination intersect. The individual must negotiate her relationship to the communities she belongs to and those outside her community, and this narrative is central to Jessica’s work. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Print Media from Alberta University of the Arts in May 2024, and completed a visual arts residency at Banff Centre of Arts and Creativity in June/July 2024.

MNG LRT Presents: Empty Lines
Empty Lines
Adriana Bergen
LRT Exhibition
11.25.2024 - 12.18.2024
Empty Lines is made up of three large canvas shrouds from my recent body of work. These pieces in particular present a more focused exploration capturing the relentless fatigue of daily existence within the mundane as an artist. They are a display of the lived body as I am able to understand and unveil it. The emptiness that this can create within our lines. I see the final work as the resting site of the process, reflecting what remains and what the materials have decided to present, evolving organically from my state of being at the time. It didn’t start with a clear intention, but rather, grew and transformed, feeding off my emotions and experiences within the process of making. Through the presence of meticulous thread, the hands of this work present an aspect of labour and utility. A further understanding of the process of making the work, and embodiments of maker, inflictor, and healer.

MNG Presents: little deaths by Murray Wittmeier
little deaths
Murray Wittmeier
LRT Space Exhibition
16.10.2024 - 13.11.2024
Opening reception October 18 @6PM
The artist works primarily in the medium of ceramics, specifically wheel throwing. They make various miniature items ranging from jars to gravestones. They also create functional dinnerware; things like large coffee/soup mugs and bowls with graphic text on the surface. Favoring a dark color palette, the artist utilizes the magic of ceramics and the fire of the kiln to achieve dynamic surfaces, most notably metallics and bright reds. Inspired by concepts such as the human body/anatomy, mortality and morbidity, surrealism, and dollhouses, the artist aims to search for clarity and control over the uncontrollable and unknown. Through miniature scale, they navigate abject ideas and intense internal emotions.
As a genderqueer person I feel like I had to kill off many small parts of myself in order to make room for new parts of my identity to form. I use the idea of the clown as a vehicle to move through the confusing and uncomfortable feelings of not fitting in your body, and not fitting with the cis-hetero normativity that was imposed upon me. For me, gender is a performance that mimics that of a clown; putting on a face and costume to appease the masses.

MNG Presents: Imago by Narda Ray
Imago
Narda Ray
Main Space Exhibition
10.16.2024 - 11.08.2024
Opening reception October 18 6PM
In entomological terms, 'Imago' refers to an insect's fully developed adult stage. This title speaks to the transformation away from my family's values, emerging into my adult principles. As a parent, I naturally expose my child to my biases, meaning transformation will also occur with my child as part of his growth. Using the destructive process of papermaking, the Christian bible is transformed from a legible text to a variety of new creations. This process and the choice of materials challenge the overly simplistic binary value system: good or bad, heaven or hell, growth or decay.
My formative years were spent immersed in the indoctrination of the church and the Christian bible which helped form societal ideas of patriarchy through gender roles, dictating to me - a girl in the church - expectations of how I should present and use my body. My art is not only a critique of childhood indoctrination but it is also a memorial of what is lost through re-orientating away from these beliefs - a loss of identity and alienation from a community. Like my spiritual reorientation, the bibles I use in my art have experienced a transformation.
Thanks to Cullen Doyle who performed and contributed to the audio track in 'Production'. Thanks also to Angie Barclay, Jenny Nickel, Katie B., Leigh Ayres Schüler, Morghan Tollefsrud, Manpreet Parmar, Pam Vickerson, and Steven Doyle for their contributions to 'To Lynn Whom I Love, By Randy'.
