Slopes Studio – A Space for Creative Resistance

Slopes Studio is an experiment, an invitation, and a call to action. This is not a fully formed project with a set vision—it’s a space for collective resistance and creative defiance. What it becomes will depend on those who step forward.

This is about eco-justice. About coal mining in the Eastern Slopes. About the potential trashing of the Oldman and North Saskatchewan watersheds. About the complete disregard for downstream communities and treaty rights. It’s about making the blowback visible.

One immediate way to use this space? Prepping signs, slogans, and chants for Friday pickets of the Environment Minister's constituency office—and bigger protests beyond. Big Coal isn’t going anywhere. There are lawsuits, an almost inevitable exploration approval for Grassy Mountain, and the long haul of a second Alberta Energy Regulator application. And beyond that—outreach to residents of Clearwater and Livingstone-Macleod districts and downstream. Sharing ideas, creating, and strategizing how to amplify resistance. Maybe even putting together some reels, building a sense of DIY joy, and pushing back with humor and boldness. Letter-writing to MLAs matters, but so does visible creativity and defiant energy. For God's sake, let’s not be bored while we defend.

At our inaugural meeting, we’ll introduce ourselves, share our visions, and begin mapping out creative projects. Whether you’re an artist, writer, researcher, or someone navigating the intersections of activism and creative practice, this is a chance to build, disrupt, and rethink together.

With deep gratitude, we acknowledge the support of The Bows, whose generosity makes this space possible. We also recognize that this work takes place on the traditional territories of the people of the Treaty 7 region in Southern Alberta.

If this resonates, reach out and join us as we take the first step toward shaping Slopes Studio into a hub for transformative action and creative resistance.
