MNG MAIN: The Reckoning
The Reckoning by Jeff Wielki
March 3 - April 6
MNG Main Space
Reception - March 21 6pm - 8pm
-
Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s 1834 poem “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” Coleridge’s poem resonates with themes of human/environment conflicts. The Reckoning abstracts a moment in Coleridge’s work when deathly supernatural figures arrive to decide the fate of the Mariner and the ships crew after the Mariner kills one of God’s creatures. The Mariner must spend the rest of his days warning others of the wrongs he committed against nature.

MNG LRT: Roxas City Fishing Port
Roxas City Fishing Port by Thea Galang
LRT Space
March 21 - April 6
Reception - March 21 from 6-8pm
-
Roxas City Fishing Port" is the artist’s interpretation of an important aspect of their birthplace in the Philippines. To them, the fishing port in their hometown represents the livelihoods of people, and how their lives are fueled by the act of fishing. The sculpture captures a singular moment in industrial fishing, where the fish are just barely raised out of the water and the tones of the fish emerge from the water.

MNG MAIN: Times I Felt Pretty
Times I Felt Pretty by Dallas Jaggard
Main Space
February 14 - March 8
Reception - February 14th from 6pm - 8pm
-
I never used to take the train, I also never used to find crosswalks beautiful. These transitory moments in between events in my life have not only become all encompassing sources of inspiration but they have also given me a new rubric by which to look at my work. Take the time to feel the sun on your face when you can...and take your professors feedback with a massive grain of salt.

MNG LRT: Naive Nouveau
Naive Nouveau by Sasha Terway
LRT Space
February 14 - March 8
Reception - February 14 from 6-8pm
-
Naive Nouveau is an aesthetic characterized as simpleminded and cute but draws on the sense that the artist knows more than they are choosing to tell with subject matter that is childlike in presentation but sophisticated in execution. Ink is a medium indicative of how I romanticize my subconscious, in its fluidity, dreamlike washes, and the care it takes to control. This series delves into the psyche of dreams, and romanticizing despair.

Reception 1.22.2025 @ 7PM
MNG Main Space

In the spirit of communal working that is fundamental to the culture of printmaking and textile craft, this exhibition is a collaborative venture between the artists of Alberta University of the Arts (AUArts) and those of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts (SMFA). Artists working in either medium were given the opportunity to share their practice with another community in an international exhibition that was curated and sent for display at the collaborating institution.
This installation of works is primarily of the artists from SMFA, with a small collection of works by current students and recent alumni of AUArts.
This exhibition was facilitated by the Marion Nicoll Gallery in conjunction with Jolie Bird, Jonathan Creese, Megan Kirk, and Vicky Rodriquez.

MNG Presents: little deaths by Murray Wittmeier
little deaths
Murray Wittmeier
LRT Space Exhibition
16.10.2024 - 13.11.2024
Opening reception October 18 @6PM
The artist works primarily in the medium of ceramics, specifically wheel throwing. They make various miniature items ranging from jars to gravestones. They also create functional dinnerware; things like large coffee/soup mugs and bowls with graphic text on the surface. Favoring a dark color palette, the artist utilizes the magic of ceramics and the fire of the kiln to achieve dynamic surfaces, most notably metallics and bright reds. Inspired by concepts such as the human body/anatomy, mortality and morbidity, surrealism, and dollhouses, the artist aims to search for clarity and control over the uncontrollable and unknown. Through miniature scale, they navigate abject ideas and intense internal emotions.
As a genderqueer person I feel like I had to kill off many small parts of myself in order to make room for new parts of my identity to form. I use the idea of the clown as a vehicle to move through the confusing and uncomfortable feelings of not fitting in your body, and not fitting with the cis-hetero normativity that was imposed upon me. For me, gender is a performance that mimics that of a clown; putting on a face and costume to appease the masses.

Zine Zone 2: Zine Zoo
Welcome back to the Zine Zone! Zines are a medium beloved by artists, activists, and anyone with something to say in need of somewhere to put it. Zinesters utilize the freedom this cheap medium offers to educate their communities and advocate for underground movements, as well as share poetry, illustrations, comics, and all means of artwork for next-to-no cash.
The Zine Zone was initially created for the fall of 2023, conceptualized as a space for students to relax and make zines. In a space craving community bonds, the initial exhibition found success by offering a “zone” for students to spend time and craft a low-stakes publication. It was so enjoyed that it felt worth repeating.
This time, there will be a zine-making workshop and exchange during the closing reception on October 7th from 5-8pm, hosted by Volatile Sex Pill and featuring tunes by The Hill and materials from Stickee Label.

MNG: Zine Zone 2 Open Call
Wow! You responded to last year's Zine Zone with such enthusiasm we thought we'd give it another go. Once again, we're focused on the value of zines in a world that is hungry for community. This accessible art form is a treasure trove of information on grassroots organization, political realities, as well as an accessible repository of poetry, love, and rants on topics so hyper-specific you couldn't find them anywhere else. As artists you're already inventive communicators. Make a zine and say it loud.
Zines could be:
Cyanotypes made with every flower you picked this spring
A collection of grocery lists which reveal your thirst for orange juice (with pulp)
An essay you wrote furiously at 4am after waking from an odd dream
Several poems on the benefits of actually eating food and not just drinking 3 coffee meals a day
Doodles from your sketchbooks that haven't seen the light of day
The possibilities are endless. Get to cutting, pasting and copying!
NOTE: A selection of zines will be archived by the Luke Lindoe Library. All zines will NOT be returned to submitting artists. Don't send anything you're hoping to keep!
Drop off in-person or mail to AUArts SA: Room 335 1407 14 Ave NW Calgary Alberta T2N 4R3
Last day to submit: August 25 2024

4.22.2024 - 5.10.2024
I am a first generation German Canadian artist. My work is an exploration of the medium of photography, exploring what is possible. My practice is inspired by the places that surround me. From a young age my family has taught me to appreciate the world, which inspired me to explore it through the lens of a camera.

Sam Lloyd :^)
04.19.2024 - 05.06.2024
Reception April 19th 7-9PM
Sam’s work as a queer and trans artist originates from a largely conservative city, where he aims to challenge societal norms and explore the relationships between object, process, concept, and context. Through humour and a solitary artistic approach, he reflects on his personal history and cultural identity to create artwork that communicates his experiences and perspectives.
At the core of his artistic practice are his Garfield paintings, where he depicts the iconic cartoon character in sexual ways or explores his sexuality in a queer context through the use of text, bright colours, and provocative poses. The inclusion of sculptural elements, particularly in the form of phallic imagery, serves as a blunt confrontation and a rejection of conservative artistic norms. It is important to note that Sam’s work is not about a cisgender man making genitals, but rather a trans man creating a trans dick, reclaiming control over his sexual and gender identity

Paige Bartsch
3.25.2024 - 4.12.2024
MNG Main Space
The Living Room addresses where the boundaries of faith and brutality intersect. This exhibition confronts uncomfortable truths surrounding domestic violence within the sanctity of religious homes. Within the confines of the domestic space lies a paradoxical realm where the sacred and the profane collide. Here, the tranquility of home becomes a veil for abusive structures backed by teachings of christian churches. Bartsch sheds light on this dichotomy, displaying the complexities of gender dynamics, power, and abuse that pervade these environments. Bartsch translates these themes through a graphic transformation of the domestic space, taking common household objects and perverting them into masses of flesh and viscera to communicate suffering and loss. Through their practice, Bartsch advocates for the de-sanitization of trauma and emphasizes the weight of suffering.
